This 20x30 metal print captures a deeply personal moment. I have traveled to the coast a few times over the last couple of years, every time hoping to find a pelican to photograph, with no luck. I bird a bit different than most because no matter how badly I may want to see a specific bird, I believe in my core that the birds find us. I believe birds are messengers and one of the closest connections we have to loved ones that we have lost.
My Nana passed away on August 16th and just days later I finally found pelicans at Lee Metcalf in Montana. I was ecstatic to see them there at all but what officially made me fall to the ground was the realization that I was looking at 16 pelicans fly away from me. It felt like my Nana sending me a little joy and one more “I love you”.
